“The Fit to Dance Scheme sees the NYB company maintain its commitment
to taking dance to primary schools and communities around the country.
The idea of providing fitness for fun through dance is a fantastic initiative.”
Darcey Bussell OBE Patron NYB

A very successful season of NYB's innovative Outreach project 'Fit to Dance' classes sponsored by The Mercers Company was held within infant and junior schools in Islington, Hackney and Birmingham.

A final presentation was performed on stage at The Ashcroft Theatre, Croydon, on 11th March 2008.

On 11th March NYB staged an hour-long performance at lunch time as part of an initiative by the Ashcroft Theatre, Croydon to interest more people in the arts.

The performance was rated 5 stars by the Croydon Advertiser's Arts Journalist and The Ashcroft Theatre was delighted with the very full stalls at this lunchtime event. Events Director, Janet Jalfon, welcomed the Company back to the theatre and said how much they hoped that NYB would return to Croydon for a full performance season in 2009.

Founding Director, Jill Tookey, was interviewed by Catharine Boston about The National Youth Ballet Company and how it had developed over the 20 years

Jill then spoke over a specially prepared twenty minute DVD showing many clips from the now vast repertoire, and interesting shots of prestigious outside events in which NYB had performed. Jill also talked about their Outreach programme.

Following this, Ballet Mistress, Judith Harris, gave some of NYB's younger dancers a delightful short class, on stage.

David Rhys then staged an innovative 'Fit to Dance' workshop for 30 local Croydon and Wimbledon primary school children. The theme focused on sport into dance and was much enjoyed by both boys and girls. The emphasis was on fitness and movement, which in turn fought the current obesity problem in young children. This series of eleven 'Fit to Dance' Workshops has been generously sponsored by The Mercers Company.
