This year a new format was adopted for NYB’s summer school, held at Tring Park.
Taking into account the constraints of the current recession it was decided that the company would extend summer school to ten days and then go straight into performances before the dancers returned to school or college. this would eliminate the usual ongoing seven rehearsal weekends in London and save both parents, students and teachers added expense.
Though a very full rehearsal timetable, the company rose to the challenge and put together a diverse programme. A variety of other classes ran in parallel for those not called to rehearsal. These included; body conditioning, repertoire, pas de deux, ballet, contemporary, national, drama and mime.
NYB much enjoyed the elegant rehearsal rooms at the mansion and took full advantage of the surrounding glorious parkland. We were also fortunate in having idyllic weather.
30 Junior Associates joined the company on a daily basis. Company Ballet Mistress, Judith Harris, choreographed their attractive 7 minute performance piece for the season and these youngest members of NYB thoroughly enjoyed the facilities and working alongside the main cast.
An innovative three day Open Day was organised for young visiting dancers. The dancers aged from 6 – 14 yrs took ballet and drama classes, tried their hand at theatrical make - up and had the pportunity to watch the company in rehearsal for Cinderella. The young visitors gave an entertaining short performance of their work to parents on their final This was also linked to characters from Cinderella. The classes, taught by Ros Taylor, David Rhys and Sue Wigglesworth were much enjoyed and NYB hopes to extend this summer school Outreach opportunity next season.
NYB’s party evening, held on the final Saturday took on a Fiesta theme and the dancers looked splendid in their Spanish costumes, Lottie Murphy, Travis Clausen-Knight and Guy Patel; gracing the lawns at the early evening BBQ. Later the company let their hair down and danced in the marquee to Spanish and disco music, kindly provided by parent, Christian Davies.
NYB hopes to adopt the shorter, focused season in future as feed back from parents and teachers has been positive. The NYB team. though ‘flat out,’ particularly in wardrobe during the condensed season, approved of the new format!
The Company’s annual choreographic competition was held in the theatre at Tring Park and the standard was higher than ever in all sections. Again, this popular competition was kindly adjudicated by Patron, Frank Freeman, and the Geoghegan Musicality Cup, by Anna Meadmore. Our sincere thanks to both of them.
